The Beginning

Founders Danni and Ian Brodie first dreamed up the business while travelling through the Southern hemisphere and working within the coffee community in New Zealand. It was there they experienced first-hand just how good coffee can be when it’s made with care, and how powerful the communities around coffee are.
That inspiration followed them home to Cardiff, where in 2013, Brodies Coffee Co. began life in a converted camper van affectionately nicknamed Beanie. Serving the best coffee and home-baked cakes they possibly could, Brodies popped up at festivals and events across Cardiff and beyond, eventually settling into a permanent pitch at Roath Farmers Market. Many of the people met there are still regulars to this day.

From Four Wheels to Four Walls

By 2016, family life was growing and priorities were shifting. With a young child in tow (often in a baby carrier whilst trading at events), it became clear that something had to change.
In the summer of 2016, Danni and Ian stumbled across the former park keeper’s hut in Gorsedd Gardens. Though rundown, the potential was obvious. In a perfectly timed twist of fate, the building came up for tender soon after and after an anxious wait, Brodies secured its first permanent home.
Those early years weren’t easy. With everything invested, the highs were incredible and the lows genuinely tough. But word spread; the coffee was exceptional, the welcome was warm, and Brodies became known as a place for good chat and great coffee. Cardiff Winters were survived, friendships were formed, and in 2019, the Brodie family grew once more.

The Pandemic Years

After 12 weeks of lockdown, Brodies reopened with no furniture and screens between people and the outdoors, unexpectedly, something special happened. Brodies became a destination, a safe place to spend that precious hour of daily freedom. The community rallied, connections deepened, and the business endured.
It was during this time that the “You Got This” message became central to Brodies Coffee Co, a simple reminder we all need sometimes and one that continues to guide everything we do.

Expansion & Milestones

In 2021, another milestone arrived with the opening of Bricks n Mortar, Brodies’ first indoor coffee shop in the heart of Cardiff’s student district. After years outdoors, having four solid walls felt momentous.
By 2023, Brodies took another step forward by sourcing and selling its own locally roasted coffee beans, a long-held dream realised and a commitment to quality strengthened.

Returning to the Parks

In 2024, history repeated itself. Standing inside a closed-down pitch and putt office in Heath Park, that familiar excitement returned. The Hut opened in the summer of 2024 and was immediately embraced by the local community. Two park-based coffee shops - three locations - one shared ethos.
As 2025 approached, the lease on Bricks n Mortar came to an end. It was a difficult decision, but parks had always been the heart of Brodies and it was time to lean fully into that identity.
Within months, it became known that the iconic Pettigrews tea rooms in Bute Park would be closing. Taking on such a historic space was a gamble, but an indoor coffee shop within a park was too good an opportunity to pass up — keeping the trilogy complete and the team together — the gamble was worth it.
Brodies Coffee On the Wall opened in July 2025.

What Does the Future Hold?

While the Wall represents a significant milestone, don’t expect a Brodies on every corner just yet, with our three park based locations we’ve achieved everything that we dreamed of and there are no plans for further expansion. It’s about quality, not quantity, a philosophy that resonates deeply with Cardiff's independent spirit.
Rain or shine, you’ll always find a friendly face and a great cup of coffee at Brodies.
